The Civil Engineering (CE) Program at the University of Portland (UP) seeks a tenure-track assistant and/or associate professor to join a thriving academic community teacher-scholars in August 2022. We encourage applicants with expertise in structural, transportation, geotechnical, or construction engineering, preferably with knowledge in sustainable practices.  Rank of the appointment will be commensurate with qualifications. 

Through small classes and labs, the CE program offers an accredited BSCE degree and a Master of Engineering degree, engaging students in the abilities, mindset, and knowledge for successful careers, service to the community, and graduate school.  This is an ideal environment for educators who are passionate about teaching and working in a student-centered community where a professional education is infused with the liberal arts. The curriculum includes active learning, hands-on collaborative projects, and a capstone project with industry partners, with opportunities for undergraduate research. Civil engineering enrollments are approximately 120 students across the full curricula.  A new 40,000+ square feet Innovation Center designed for cross-disciplinary collaboration and external partnerships is in final design and we expect newly renovated civil engineering laboratories within the next three years.

This is a full-time faculty position with benefits.  Benefits include: medical & dental insurance, life insurance, long-term disability insurance, sick time, and tuition remission benefits starting after 90 days of employment.  (Please note that eligibility for all University benefits is subject to applicable policies, practices, and requirements.)

Teaching commitment of 9 credit hours per semester; this is a full-time, 9-month (August - May) position. 

Enhance, develop, and teach the equivalent of 3 courses per semester across all levels of the curriculum.  In addition to civil engineering courses and labs, the faculty also teach introductory and general engineering courses.  There are opportunities to develop new courses, and some courses include both undergraduate and graduate students.

Mentor and advise students on capstone projects (projects are counted as part of the teaching commitment).

Pursue scholarly activity within the discipline by developing an independent research program that enhances teaching and program offerings.

Provide service to the department, school, university, and greater community.  Responsibilities at the Associate Professor level include program leadership (leadership is counted as part of the teaching commitment).

Assist with program assessments and accreditation reports.

Education & Experience

- Required: Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or a related area at the time the position will start (August 2022).

- Required: Lived experience, knowledge, skills, and/or success in diversity, equity & inclusions work within or transferable to higher education.

- Required: Ability to enhance and teach courses, labs and workshops in one or more of the following areas: structural, transportation, geotechnical, or construction engineering.

- Required: Ability to enhance and teach general engineering courses.

- Required: For applicants at the Associate Professor level, current or past tenured position as an Associate Professor of civil engineering.

- Required: For applicants at the Associate Professor level, demonstrated accomplishment in independent research.  For applicants at the Assistant Professor level, ability to conduct and develop an independent research program.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Preferred:

- BS in civil engineering or a related major.

- Ability to guide students in sustainable and innovative engineering solutions.

- Professional licensure or the ability to pursue licensure.

- Evidence of effective course development and teaching at the university level.

- Ability to engage undergraduate students in meaningful research.

- Evidence of effective collaborative research with other faculty.

- For applicants at the Assistant Professor level, training or experience in engineering education.

- For applicants at the Associate Professor level, leadership in current and past appointments.

- For applicants at the Associate Professor level, experience in accreditation and assessment practices.
