The Shiley School of Engineering at the University of Portland (UP) invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor rank to enhance the Master of Biomedical Engineering program effective August 2022. 

The School offers a Master of Biomedical Engineering degree, which focuses on medical device development.  We seek candidates with education and experience in one of the following areas: materials science with biomedical applications; mechatronics with biomedical applications.

Depending on expertise, the position would also support the following programs in the School: Mechanical Engineering (BSME); Electrical Engineering (BSEE); Common engineering courses, which could span all four years of an undergraduate curriculum.

The position is ideal for educators passionate about teaching and scholarship in a student-centered institution where we strive for a balance of professional education within a liberal arts environment.  Through small classes and labs, the School's programs engage students in developing skills and knowledge for successful careers. The curriculum includes hands-on, collaborative projects, often conducted with industry partners.  The Master of Biomedical Engineering program is profession-focused, small-cohort, and largely comprised of students aiming to enter the medical device design industry. This is a full-time faculty position with benefits.  Benefits include: medical & dental insurance, life insurance, long-term disability insurance, sick time, and tuition remission benefits starting after 90 days of employment.  (Please note that eligibility for all University benefits is subject to applicable policies, practices, and requirements.)

We will conduct the first review of applications on November 1, 2021 and continue until the position is filled.  Preference will be given to interested applicants who submit applications and all required materials by October 31, 2021.


The position is full­ time for nine months (August-May) per year. The faculty member is expected to enhance, develop, and teach the equivalent of three courses (or nine credit hours) per semester across undergraduate and graduate engineering curricula.  Faculty in Shiley teach courses and labs in their area of expertise. They may also teach courses such as introduction to engineering, engineering computing with applications, analysis of engineering data, and engineering economics. There are opportunities to develop new courses, and some courses include both undergraduate and graduate students.

The faculty member will participate in department, school, and university faculty/staff meetings and professional development workshops.

The faculty member will pursue scholarly activity within their discipline to enhance teaching and program offerings.

The faculty member will serve the School of Engineering, University of Portland, and the greater community.

The faculty member will assist with program assessments and accreditation reports.

The faculty member will mentor and advise students and capstone projects (projects count toward the teaching commitment).


Education & Experience

Required: Doctorate (Ph.D., D.Eng, D.Sc, etc.) degree in one of the following areas (Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Material Science & Engineering) or a closely related field at the time the position will start (August 2022)

Required: Demonstrated lived experience, knowledge, skills, and/or success in diversity, equity & inclusion work within or transferable to higher education.

Required: Teaching, training, or technical supervisory/managerial experience.

Required: Ability to enhance and teach a variety of engineering courses, labs, and workshops.

Required: Ability to enhance and teach courses in one or more of the following areas: medical device development, biocompatible materials, materials science and lab, mechatronics, instrumentation/testing, statistical design of experiments, or other related areas.

Additional Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Preferred

Certificate or degree in Engineering Education

Evidence of effective course development and teaching at the university level

Experience working with university students in the classroom, on capstone projects, or as the director/manager of internships

Evidence of effective oral and written communication skills

Evidence of effective project collaboration

Evidence of impactful scholarly endeavors
