Address where work would take place: 815 NE Davis, Portland, Oregon 97232

Position Description: The Volunteer is expected to contribute at least four hours per week, but the schedule may flex to accommodate the Volunteer’s schedule, shifts in census, or increased workloads. This position has minimal approved access to patient care areas and the patient directory only as needed, to carry out their duties.

Expected number of hours per week: 8

Position Schedule: Can do one 8 hour shift or split it into two 4 hour shifts, Monday-Friday, 8:30am - 5pm.

Type of student that would work well in this position: Anyone that has had some office experience or equivalent

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Records Maintenance
    • File information in patient records, breaking down charts and updating information as directed by the office staff and/or supervisor
    • Keep accurate records
    • Track volunteer visits as requested by the Volunteer Coordinator
    • Data entry for computerized patient or volunteer records, if trained to do so
  • Public Contact
    • Make telephone calls to other volunteers to schedule patient visits or remind of volunteer meetings
    • Make telephone calls to patients’ families to verify other volunteer requests or to check on well-being of family, as indicated by staff
    • Answer office telephones and direct calls while staff is in morning meeting
    • Make telephone calls to community organizations as requested by staff
  • Materials Preparation
    • Assemble packets to be distributed to staff, patients/families or other volunteers
    • Prepare mailings:  stuff, address and seal envelopes and bundle for postage
  • Event Assistance
    • Assist in the planning and/or coordination of hospice events like "Light Up a Life" and the "Spring Memorial"
    • Write "thank-you" notes to Hospice Foundation contributors

Essential Job Functions:

  • Must be eligible for Federal Work Study
  • Ability to listen and communicate well and to interact with a variety of people
  • Ability to work and communicate cooperatively as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Ability to work independently after initial orientation
  • Ability and willingness to learn how to operate postage meter, copy machines, fax and telephone; computer experience is helpful but not required
  • Position requires periods of standing, sitting and moving around the office; accommodations will be made on an as-needed basis
  • Ability to read, write and speak the English language
