Physics tutors provide Physics tutoring services to UP students in the Learning Commons in Buckley Center 163. Physics tutors work 2-6 hours a week, based on tutoring experience, course background, and scheduling demands. Tutors provide tutoring services by appointment only. Pay rate is set by Student Employment. The Learning Commons is a program of the Shepard Academic Resource Center (SARC). 12-14 hours of paid training for this position will occur on dates to be determined.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Maintain a professional, communicative, and welcoming environment in the PAC and Learning Commons
  • Value and maintain confidentiality of students following FERPA guidelines
  • Maintain accurate record of time worked and active tutoring time
  • Follow Learning Commons Code of Ethics
  • Support active student learning in 200-level physics classes, including development of learning strategies, study skills, test and quiz review
  • Actively participate in all required training sessions toward eventual ITTPC Level 1 certification just prior to and during the first semester of employment and for community building purposes within the SARC. Tutors who fail to complete the training within four months risk being terminated.
  • Maintain a clean and organized space in the Learning Commons.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be enrolled as a full-time UP student
  • Successful completion of tutored courses with A- or better
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Physics Department endorsement for courses the Physics Tutor intends to tutor
  • Availability to work a minimum of 2 hours per week
  • Ability to flex schedule based on appointment requests
  • At least second-year class standing
  • Availability to attend paid training immediately upon being hired.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated excellence in academic peer assistance within or outside of the classroom or experience teaching or one-on-one tutoring.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above.
  • Availability to work up to 4 hours per week.
