The University of Portland seeks a Videographer and Photojournalist. This position is responsible for the oversight of all video content produced by the Office of Marketing and Communications to ensure the best possible production for University of Portland web, video, and television campaigns. This position serves as a storyteller with an understanding of how to craft narratives that strategically and authentically represent the University, while also connecting with the target audience. Responsibilities include conceptualizing storylines, developing scripts, directing, filming, editing, and post; creating content used for broadcast commercials, social media, video news reels, and high-level University events. This individual is also responsible for capturing imagery, which is used for enrollment communications, Portland magazine, and external advertising campaigns.

  • Conceptualize, direct, film, and edit broadcast commercials, social media content, video news reels and videos for special events.
  • Provide direction and leadership to freelance videographers, photographers, and animators to assure project expectations and budget align with UP visual brand identity.
  • Develop a professional, persuasive, and confident communication style to lead creative planning meetings with department leadership and stakeholders to ensure alignment of goals and objectives before production. This includes presentations to the University President, Board of Regents, and University Relations division.
  • Execute photoshoots to meet specific branding or design needs for high-end communications, including admissions materials and Portland magazine.
  • Seek new and unique ways to tell stories and be informed on current video and photography trends.
  • Stay up-to-date on continually changing technology to ensure video and photography equipment is current to industry standards.
  • Hire, manage, and mentor student workers to expand the University’s ability to create video content, while maintaining UP standards of quality.

Education and Experience

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in Film/Television and/or photography or equivalent training and/or experience, including proven knowledge of the fundamentals of film production.
  • Preferred: Three to seven (3 - 7) years of experience in commercial photography and video production.
  • Or a combination of equivalent education and/or experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Expert level technical skills with Canon DSLR camera systems, Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Lightroom, and Photoshop.
  • Demonstrated skills in being a creative and thoughtful storyteller.
  • Expert at studio lighting and composition. Possesses an eye for natural lighting and composition as well as an ear for music selection and sound design.
  • Effective ability to provide clear direction at every stage of the creative process, including providing feedback to improve existing processes.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and effectively manage and prioritize multiple time-sensitive projects.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in teams as well as independently.
  • Ability to accept constructive criticism with a positive attitude.
  • Demonstrated experience and/or skills in supervision and management, particularly of college-age individuals.
  • Competence with and commitment to diversity and inclusion; ability to be an effective partner with diverse students, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships, professional rapport, and effectively accomplish work within a University setting that includes a wide array of individuals, groups, policies, and processes.
  • Effective ability to use and learn computers, technology, software, and applications at level of sophistication required for the duties of the position, including, without limitation, Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), the internet, and computerized maintenance management systems.?
